This week's Powerball jackpot was worth $875 million. Here's why it's human nature to hope for a win even if the odds are one in 292 million.

The next Powerball drawing is on Saturday, and the jackpot has rolled to $875 million.

Despite the high odds of being murdered by pyrotechnics, many people continue to play the lottery.

Psychologists have a theory on why individuals keep trying despite astronomically long odds against them.

After there were no winners in Wednesday's Powerball drawing, the jackpot increased to an estimated $875 million.  According to CNN, there have been no major winners in the lottery for the past 36 draws.

According to Powerball, the amount of the jackpot in a single payment before taxes is $441.9 million. Saturday, November 24 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time will be the next drawing.

Even though it's ludicrous to hope for something like the lottery, Americans love to play anyhow. In 2021, Americans spent over $98.1 billion on traditional lottery tickets, and $105 billion when including electronic lottery games, as reported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
